Anticipate the expected or Prepare the unexpected?

Have you ever found unexpected things pop up from nowhere from time to time? Then wish that you could have planned a contingency plan along the way.

Most of the people will act on what is expected in the future.
For example, making dinner plan with friends over next weekend knowing that there will be no work on the day... Or simply booking a holiday for Christmas six month ahead.

While we are making those adventurous plans in the future, how often do we think ahead for what possibly could happen? Not only it could totally ruin the mood for those exciting planning but in deep down, we probably never wanted it to happen anyway and happily avoid it.

But then we all know nothing in the world goes exactly as we planned, the question is how far should we prepare for the unexpected? Take the Christmas holiday as an example, do you simply plan for a different destination if the desired one is not available or perhaps prepare something more remote like family emergency resulting no time to go away at all?

In this world which is full of possibilities and with endless decisions to make, we can only plan ahead so far ahead with limited resources and knowledge to assist us. Maybe planning ahead and anticipating greatly for the unexpected is the only way to avoid disappointment for any cause? Sounds ironic but is there a better way at all?
